ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)-- The winter storm that paralyzed much of the St. Louis region Thursday began to move off to the east Thursday evening, but not before leaving a mess of snow, sleet, and freezing rain across the Bi-State region.

With a foot of snow across western and central Missouri and the mix of sleet and snow in St. Louis, Governor Jay Nixon has declared a State of Emergency.

Accumulations of snow and sleet ranged from 8"+ across central and northeastern Missouri to an inch or less across far southern counties. The St. Louis metropolitan area saw a general 4-6" of sleet and snow. Freezing rain was a bigger concern south of I-44 in Missouri and I-64 in Illinois. Accumulations of ice led to more concern for power lines in the area.

It was a very cold day in St. Louis and that led many people to wonder why we saw a wintry mix instead of all snow. Chief Meteorologist Dave Murray explained that while surface temperatures were below freezing all day, warmer air higher up in the atmosphere led to the change to mixed precipitation.

As the storm pulled away Thursday evening, lingering freezing drizzle was possible and MoDOT and IDOT along with city street crews will have to stay on top of road conditions into the Friday morning commute.
