SPRINGFIELD, IL (KPLR)-- Hearings on gun safety are underway in Springfield.

A bill introduced in the house would allow people to carry concealed guns in public.

The measure also calls for tougher background and mental health checks.

And there would be restrictions on where, in public, guns can be taken.

The bill is in response to a federal appellate court ruling which struck down Illinois’ concealed-carry ban.

Illinois is the only state in the country without a concealed-carry law.
