MAPLEWOOD, MO. (KTVI) – Police in Maplewood and Richmond Heights are beefing up patrols this weekend in areas where vandals have been shooting out car windows with BB guns. It’s happened nearly thirty times since January 20.
The first several cases happened on Valley Drive in Maplewood, where one resident who asked not to be identified had her car window broken out. She’s elderly and on a fixed income, making any repairs a burden.
“I had to pay for that and I’m on social security. And you don’t get much on social security,” she said.
There have been nine cases in Maplewood and 21 in Richmond Heights, the latter happening the following weekend.
“What we think we have are probably a group of juveniles driving around in vehicles, possibly more than one vehicle,” Maplewood Police Detective Kerry Daniels said. “They’re driving around with BB guns and shooting at people’s windows.”
Officers will be taking extra notice of teenagers in the coming days.
“They’re looking for teenagers riding around in vehicles also they’re out just looking for suspicious vehicles with occupants, probably more than one in the car.”
And Daniels promises quick action if they’re caught.
“Be prepared. If we find you and we find BB’s and BB guns or pellet guns in your car we’re gonna take it to the extreme,” he warns.
The Maplewood victim we spoke to sees that as good news.
“I think it’s outrageous. The children, the parents don’t raise them nowadays. My father would have beat the crap of me if I did anything like that when I was growing up,” she said.
