ST. LOUIS, MO. (KPLR) - Millions of dollars eligible for low to medium income families is going to waste, says Mayor Francis Slay.

Friday morning at city hall Mayor Slay and other leaders kicked off EITC Awareness Day, an effort to stress the importance of EITC tax refunds.

Households making less than $51,000 in 2012 may be eligible for the EITC or earned income tax credit refund.

National studies indicate that between 10 and 20 percent of families eligible to receive the break fail to claim the credit primarily because they are unaware of the program.

The program provides more than $103.8 million in the City Of St. Louis, affecting the lives of more than 41,500 families.

Mayor Slay says this is the best anti poverty program there is, but people are not using it.
