FLORISSANT, MO (KTVI)–  The family of R&B and Gospel star Fontella Bass have made arrangements for her memorial service.

Bass passed away in a local nursing home just before 10 p.m. Wednesday night.  She died of complications from a heart attack she suffered in early December 2012.  She was surrounded by friends and family.

Bass is most famous for her hit “Rescue Me”, which she co-wrote and performed in 1965.  For almost 50 years, the biggest stars in music covered the song which also appeared in several television commercials.  The St. Louis native toured and sang for her fans around the world.  But, friends say her favorite accomplishment may have been getting a star on the St. Louis Walk of Fame in University City, Missouri.

Fontella Bass was 72 years old.
