ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- Shoppers are urged to be extra careful while out and about this holiday season especially women.

Experts say the bad guys conduct a profile on potential victims sizing them up on the spot within a matter of seconds while looking for a good target to rob.

They say brazen robbers scope malls waiting for the perfect victim to rob.

In most cases, the perfect victim ends up being a woman rather than a man.

During today's taping of the Pulse of St. Louis, Maryland Heights Police Chief Colonel Thomas O'Connor explained that's because women are usually smaller than men loaded down with packages and purses and sometimes distracted by their children.

They are not aware they're being watched by a criminal waiting for an opportunity to strike.

Shoppers are reminded to never leave items visible in their vehicles and to be aware of their surroundings at all times.
