NORTH ST. LOUIS, MO. (KTVI) – A car with a one-year-old girl in the backseat was stolen in North St. Louis Tuesday.  The car was taken from a gas station and child's mother, Tiara Smith, saw it happen.

"I left the engine running and parked right in front of the window,"  Smith said. "I saw him jump in the car, and I saw him drive away."

Police spotted the car a few blocks from where it was stolen.

"He saw them, and then he just crashed the car into the sidewalk," Smith said.

The suspect got away while officers were tending to the baby.

"I am just glad she is okay," Smith said. “I will never leave her in the car again."
