TOWN AND COUNTRY, MO (KPLR)-- Town and Country police are looking for burglars who broke into two churches overnight. It happened at the 1900 block of Des Peres at the Gateway Christian Church and down the road at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.

Town and Country police Captain Gary Hoelzer says they have had a spike in residential burglaries, but church break-ins are rare.

"They broke the window out but set off the alarm that happened right before 1 and they fled. This morning a church down the road on Des Peres Road the workers came in and discovered that a window had been pried open to a classroom and two laptops and a television were stolen," said Hoelzer.

Both churches declined our request for an interview and didn't want to discuss the matter. However, nearby churches and businesses say they have not had any recent issues. Police are also sending out email alerts to all of the local churches about the break-ins

"We're not sure about this one but we know that our residential burglaries the serial burglars that go through this area it is predominately drug related," said Hoelzer

Police are tracking down clues and are hoping fingerprints and other DNA evidence will help them catch the people responsible for the thefts.

"We're just encouraging them to make sure when they leave for the day that the building is secure including doors and windows and if they have a security system make sure that it is activated," he said.
