(KTVI) - One carjacker is dead and another is on the loose after a crazy sequence of events early Monday morning.  It started with a carjacking and police pursuit in North St. Louis County and ended with two crashes in North St. Louis.

Authorities say it all started around 12:30 a.m. Monday when a Dodge Charger was carjacked from a North County home. Investigators say a second car, a Chevy Malibu which may have been stolen earlier on Sunday in north city, was also at that scene.

Both cars took off after the carjacking with County police chasing each vehicle. St. Louis County police say they stopped chasing the cars once they hit the city. About 10 minutes after the carjacking, the Charger crashed at Kingshighway and Lexington in North City.

City police were there with their guns drawn looking for the suspect. But that person got away, according to police. That crash happened after the car hit an 18-wheeler and a tree then flipped over.

A couple of minutes after that wreck, the Chevy Malibu that was possibly stolen crashed at West Florissant and Mimica.  The car crashed into a building.  The driver was taken to a hospital where police say he died.

Police have not released his name yet but he is described as a black male in his 20s. No one was hurt in the original carjacking scene and police have no description of the suspect who got away.

Homicide detectives and accident reconstruction crews are working the city scenes. St. Louis County police are handling the original carjacking -- the victim there was also robbed.
