JEFFERSON COUNTY, MO (KTVI) – Several fire departments battled a smoky fire in Jefferson County Thursday night.

Just before midnight, a fire broke out in a wooded area between two subdivisions near Schneider Drive and Romaine Creek Road, just off Highway 141.

The fire was in a valley, so crews had to leave their trucks behind and fight the flames on foot.

It took them about an hour to get the fire under control.

It's not clear how the fire started.
