ST. CHARLES, MO (KTVI) – A major traffic alert from MoDOT—the westbound Blanchette Bridge is going to shut down for a year starting next Sunday into Monday morning. All of the westbound bridge traffic will use eastbound lanes. There will be three lanes going each way on the eastbound side.

Normally there are five lanes on each side of the bridge. A concrete median will separate east and westbound traffic.

“We`re going to have a crossover onto narrow lanes and those lanes are going to be more like what you experience on the westbound bone bridge. They`re ten and a half feet wide,”said MoDOT engineer Ed Hassinger.

Pavement has been laid down so drivers can crossover onto the eastbound side of the bridge then back over the westbound side. MoDOT says it`s critical for drivers to use alternate routes like 370 and the Page Avenue Extension to avoid major back-ups.
And MoDOT wants you to start using those alternates now.

Hassinger explained, “We know that during rush hour if people don’t change their habits a little bit it will be pretty bad. But we do know that we have plenty of capacity on 370 and on Page Avenue.”

The on ramp from northbound Fifth Street in St. Charles onto 70 East will be closed for the project.

And a traffic light has been put up on the on the ramp from South Fifth Street onto 70 east to help regulate traffic.

“If you think about things, where you`re going, how you`re going to get there, this should really be pretty smooth. If you don`t you`re going to have a problem” said Hassinger.

Lane closures on and around the Blanchette bridge will start this Friday and continue throughout the weekend as crews restripe the roadway.

The speed limit through the construction zone will be 45 miles per hour.
