Sandy’s Storm Surge Forces Atlantic City Evacuation

(CNN) — Officials are evacuating several hundred people from west Atlantic City, an area filled with many single-story motels where water levels are “dangerously high,” said county spokeswoman Linda Gilmore. “Conditions are deteriorating as we speak,” she said. “This storm is unprecedented.”

President Barack Obama called on Americans to heed local storm evacuation orders Monday. Anyone who doesn’t follow evacuation orders, he said, is “putting first responders in danger.” The president spoke to reporters from the White House after a Situation Room briefing on the storm.
