ST. LOUIS, MO. (KPLR) – On Thursday, the St. Louis Circuit Attorney revealed how a DNA national database was a key in solving a rape.
Keith Smith pleaded guilty on Oct. 16, 2012 to raping a 22-year-old woman in July of 2010.
It happened in the 3600 block of Alberta St.
Brittany Chaffee lives near the crime scene.
“It is scary because this is just not a safe area to walk alone,” Chaffee said.
Smith grabbed the victim while she was walking and raped her, according to prosecutors.
Investigators used evidence from a rape kit that was performed on the victim to solve the crime.
“It helped and made it easier for us to handle this case,” Asst.
Circuit Attorney Kristi Hodel said.
Hodel also praised the victim’s “bravery” during the investigation.
“She did all the right things and even picked him out of a line up later on,’ Hodel said.
Smith is scheduled to be sentenced in December.
Prosecutors are seeking life in prison.
