KC Zoo Fined Over Starvation Death Of Chimp
KANSAS CITY, MO (WDAF) — The Kansas City Zoo has been fined by the federal government after one of its chimpanzees starved to death late last year because other chimps wouldn’t let him have any food.
According to the Associated Press, the zoo was fined over $4,500 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture after Nusu, a 13-year-old male chimp, was prevented from eating by more dominate chimps in the enclosure.
Nusu weighed just 90 pounds when he died last December – 50 pounds less than normal. Zookeepers who were assigned to keep track of the chimp’s weight had not weighed the animal in nearly 20 months.
Zoo officials say that changes have been made to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
