ST. LOUIS, MO. (KPLR) – Mrs. Missouri International 2013 is using her title to help raise awareness about human trafficking.

Adelaida Peterson saw the horror of human trafficking as a child growing up in the Philippines.

"It is a terrible life and I wanted to do something about it," she said.

Peterson is participating in the 5K Run/Walk for Freedom in Ballwin on Sept. 29. at Queeny Park.

"The proceeds will go to help victims," she said.

Peterson said human trafficking is the "culprit" behind much of the prostitution in the United States.

"The guys make them think they are their boyfriend and then force them into that lifestyle," she said.
