CLAYTON, MO (KPLR) – Clayton police are investigating a possible case of a man impersonating a law officer.

Authorities say the suspect pulled over a woman Wednesday morning in a police-like vehicle, then proceeded to physically assault her before she was able to get away.

Clayton Police Chief Tom Byrne says the victim – who is an adult woman – has been at the police department talking with detectives.

He tells us she is physically ok, but obviously shaken up from what happened.

This all went down just off busy Hanley Road on Polo Drive in Clayton around 8:15am Wednesday .

Investigators say the woman was driving to work north on Hanley when the man pulled up behind her in a dark blue Crown Victoria.

We’re told the Crown Vic had flashing lights on the dashboard along with flashing headlights. The car also had a spotlight.

Police say the woman pulled over, thinking she was being stopped for some kind of traffic violation.

Investigators tell us the man got out of the car and was wearing a gray shirt with an oval gold badge on it along with dark pants and a holster with something on the left side of it.

The man reportedly opened the woman’s door, pulled her out, punched her in the face, then pulled her over to the front of her car and threw her down on the ground.

Byrne says the woman was then able to throw her head back and hit the man in the groin. The chief tells us he then doubled over and the woman was able to get into her car and drive off to her workplace where she called police.

The suspect is described as a white male in his late 30’s. He’s about six feet, one inch tall and about 190 pounds, with short brown hair with a little more on the top and has a goatee.

Chief Byrne says it is possible the man could be some kind of security guard and the incident might be a road rage case and not a cop impersonation. But he says the victim doesn’t remember anything that would have prompted a road rage situation.
