ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)-- Rochelle Cook is still trying to deal with the reality that her 18-year-old daughter Aniya is gone. She was shot on July 31st while Aniya was visiting a friend at the 5200 block of Highland.

Aniya went to console because of a murder that happened earlier that night. She was shot in the face while sitting in a car. She died a few days later. Cook says she wants justice for her daughter and all of the others whose lives were taken too soon.

"I'm so upset with the fact that no one brought attention to Aniya who she was. She was just called the 75th homicide in the city of St. Louis," said Cook.

Aniya was a college bound honor roll student who had just graduated from Imagine College Prep last May.  She was planning to attend Missouri State University in the fall with her best friend.  Her career goal was to work behind the scenes in the media. Cook says the only way to stop violence is to get the community to step in and make a change.

"A lot of kids, young men, and ladies are not getting love or attention so it stems back to the fact that nobody is raising these kids. People in the city need to speak up, people need to speak up to stop this code of silence," stated Cook.

The gunman who murdered Aniya Cook is still on the loose. While investigators work the case, family and friends plan to work with the community to find answers to this crime and many others that plague the city before another promising life like Aniya’s is lost.

"A vicious crime like this can hit anyone. I never knew it would be me, I never knew it would be me," she said.

Vigil location is on Highland and Kingshighway.
