CLAYTON, MO (KPLR) - Animal advocates have proclaimed that Sunday is National Dog Day.

"It's a day to celebrate a big part of your family, like Grandmother's day or Mother's Day.  It's dedicating a specific time to give back to somebody or something that's made a big part of your life," said Mary Anne Richards with Lola and Penelope's Pet Boutique in Clayton.

According to the American Pet Products Association, Americans will spend more than $53 billion on their pets this year. No price is to puny for your pooch, especially since you can find everything from Cardinal clothing to cookies all made for your four legged pal.

"But I think National Dog Day people go that extra mile to make sure they can dedicate some specific time to give back for what they've given to us over the years," said Richards.

Which is a lot...when you count in dog years.
