Update: Shawndrea Thomas reports that , after our story aired, the man who took the Locks of Love hair donation returned it to the salon overnight with a note saying he was sorry.

MEHLVILLE, MO (KPLR)-- A Melville salon owner is upset because a man claiming to be from Locks of Love is stealing hair.

Gail Brumley of the James Gang Hair Salon has been doing hair for more than 40 years. She was shocked to learn that a man who stopped by her shop last week claiming to be a representative from Locks of Love collecting hair donations to make wigs for sick kids was running a scam. The man had no connection to Locks of Love.

"We're gonna spread the word that he isn't and so that he doesn't deprive these kids of getting a chance of getting a wig while going through treatment," said Brumley.

The man walked out with a bag of hair donated by customers but that wasn't his only stop.

According to an employee, the same man was seen at other shops around town asking for the same thing. He wanted long hair, preferably red. Workers said he really wanted to make and sell dolls.

"These hair extension products are very expensive to buy and if he's making dolls he can order it himself but apparently he's trying to cut corners," Brumley said.

FOX 2 called Locks of Love and we're told they've had problems with phony solicitors in the past and have rules for donations. All donations and events are handled through the home office in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Brumley says if you see a white male about 6 feet tall between 60 and 70 years old asking for hair donations beware because his scam is taking away from those who need it most.

"We gotta stop this guy it’s not right," she said.
