NEW YORK, NY (WPIX) - I want to talk about guns. Sit back down and let me finish before you run to write and email. I don't want to take away your guns.

Every time you mention guns as an issue. Gun owners think you are going to take away their guns. It is that passion that scares politicians and commentators alike. That and the fact that you have guns.

The fact is that gun owners are well organized and well funded through their lobbying organization the National Rifle Association. You'll notice that nobody talks about gun control anymore. That's because the NRA controls congress with money and threats.

That's why the federal assault rifle ban expired in 2004 without so much as a whimper. We haven't heard boo about it since. Both President Obama and Mitt Romney have supported assault rifle bans in the past. But not now, they both cower to the NRA.

Look, gun ownership is settled law. There are so many guns in America it is ridiculous to think that we are ever going to get rid of all guns. I just want to get rid of some of them. Sit back down, I'm not talking about your guns, I'm talking about John Holmes' guns. Can't we make it a little more difficult for guys like crazy carrot top to assemble an arsenal?

He bought 6,000 rounds of ammo online in a four month period without a background check and with no national data base to follow his activity. One person doesn't buy 6,000 rounds unless they are planning something really bad. We found out in aurora, colorado, the hard way, how bad a thing it was.

Authorities should have been able to track those purchases and then they would have been on to this insane clown before he snapped. Can't we have a real national conversation about that without threats and repercussion? It would be good to have the NRA involved. It would be better still if our leaders weren't such cowards.
