(KPLR)-Illinois smokers are now paying more to light up.  A new cigarette tax increase went into effect Sunday.  The tax is going from $0.98 to $1.98 a pack. Strong cigarette sales were reported at stores all day Saturday in advance of the tax hike.

Many smokers have been stocking up prior to the increase.  Distributors have had trouble meeting demand.
