ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)-- The historic Soulard farmers market is the oldest market west of the Mississippi. It has been a part of St. Louis since the 1800's. With all of its antiquity comes the need for upgrades. Now the city is looking to make changes to improve the market's viability.

Recently a steering committee came up with a 12 million dollar master plan to help fix the infrastructure that includes electric, heating and plumbing repairs. They also want to add a system of interchangeable doors to use in the winter. All changes that Rosina Inserra -Meyer says are needed. Her family has been selling goods at the Soulard market for more than 100 years

"Well there's always room for improvement and we'd like to see it spruced up and look good. We just hope that it doesn't interfere with the way that all of the vendors do business everybody is different and the vendors are what are the main attraction to the market and what brings people here," said vendor Rosina Inserra-Meyer

Improved parking and the conversion of the gym into a cooking school and dining hall are part of the plan. Changes to hours of operation, the park and new signage are also on the list.
City officials say funding for the project will come from park bonds and private sponsorships. They will be on hand at the upcoming open house to answer questions.

"We've been here for 100 years and we still have family that's interested in staying here and other people have family. And we just want to make sure it's here for the rest of us and rest of them," she said.

The meeting is set for June 27th from 5 to 7pm at the Ninth Street Abbey located at 1808 South 9th Street, St. Louis, MO 63104.
