DES PERES, MO (KPLR) - Get ready for what could be major backups on Interstate 270. Beginning Tuesday, MoDOT will completely shut down a stretch of I-270 for short intervals in the Kirkwood and Des Peres areas as part of a project to widen the interstate to five lanes in each direction.

The shut downs will happen every weekday this summer (weather permitting) at approximately 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The I-270 closure will start at Manchester Road and continue until Big Bend and should last for 15 minutes or less.  The closure is necessary so crews can blast out rocks along the shoulders of the roadway.  MoDOT crews will blast, clean up the rock from the roadway, and then get traffic moving again.

The work is mostly being done during off-peak times, but drivers are advised to avoid I-270 during the blasting times.
