Ballwin Woman, Police Officers Injured In House Fire

BALLWIN, MO (KPLR)- A woman in her 80's and two police officers were injured in a Ballwin house fire Saturday night. The officers were trying to save the woman from her burning bedroom in the 100 block of Coral Terrace around 9:15 p.m., firefighters said.

Neighbors told NEWS 11 they began smelling smoke but there were no flames visible on the outside of the house and it was dark.  They didn’t figure out the source, until the elderly woman`s husband came out of the house looking for help.

Neighbors said they could see the woman standing near her upstairs bedroom window.  Police and neighbors tried to get up the stairs to save her, but could not pass through the thick smoke.

Police got a ladder up to the window and broke the glass; firefighters then arrived and helped police get the woman out of the room and down the ladder, firefighters said.

The woman was rushed to a hospital in critical condition with burns and smoke inhalation. The two police officers suffered smoke inhalation;  one of them also suffered lacerations to his hand & arm from the broken glass. The officers' injuries were not life threatening. The woman's husband was not hurt, firefighters said.
