TOWN & COUNTRY (KPLR) - The unusually warm winter and spring has been great for getting outside, but there is a downside you need to know about.
This is normally the time of year we start to deal with mosquitoes and ticks, but because of the amazing winter, spring warmth, and just the right amount of moisture, this year population of pesky bugs is exploding. And that means the potential for disease is on the rise.
The Health Department in Gallatin County, Illinois in the southern part of the state reported the first West Nile-infested mosquitoes of the season. They collected a mosquito batch back on May 24 that tested positive for the virus.
Last year, Illinois ranked 5th in the nation with 34 reported human cases of West Nile with three of those proving fatal.
