ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KPLR) – A child was struck and killed in a south St. Louis County parking lot.

Authorities said the 21-month-old girl was being unbuckled from her car seat by her mother when she darted out in front of a SUV in the parking lot of Esse Health on Tesson Ferry.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released yet. The mother had two other children with her.

A 65-year-old male doctor was driving the SUV. The doctor tried to resuscitate the child. It initially appears to be an accident.

Statement from Esse Health: “We are all deeply saddened by the loss of this 21-month-old child in this tragic accident in the parking lot of our office earlier today,” said David E. Hartenbach, MD, chairman of Esse Health.  “This family is well-known to us and we feel as a member of our own family has been lost today.”

“Our prayers go out to this family in this very difficult time. Loss of any life is always difficult, but losing a young child like this is particularly tragic. Our hearts are with the parents and other family members during this very hard time.
