SPANISH LAKE, MO (KPLR)-Some call it a farm. Others call it an estate. Anyone who has ever seen it simply calls it spectacular. But not many have seen it until now.
Kuhs Estate looks like someplace in the country, but its actually just in St. Louis County at the north edge of suburbia and the margin of local history.
Elizabeth Parker says, “It was built as a weekend home by my great-grandfather who purchased the land in 1925.”
Elizabeth Parker's great-grandfather was Edward L. Kuhs, an enterprising German immigrant who took an 1800's dairy farm and turned it into a rural paradise at the end of Spanish Pond drive in Spanish Lake on the most northeastern high point overlooking the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.
“To see this much of the river expanse is wonderful and I love when people come out and say wow!,” says Parker.
It is Gatsby meets Green Acres, 150 of them in fact. They have a little bit and do a little bit of everything, including rescuing thoroughbreds. The estate has been fixed up and is being opened to the public this weekend as part of the Spanish Lake Garden Tour.
“ We are just more than delighted not just because it has been closed to the public for so many years but because it is a wonderful spot.”
The truth is Kuhs farm has not been completely closed. For the past few years, they have been renting the upstairs of the old dairy barn for parties and weddings. Parties here often made the paper. Its barbeque overlook was even featured in Life magazine. Now, Elizabeth Parker is trying to bring it all back to life. A lot of the help is coming from volunteers.
“I cared for her mother til the day she died and I promised her on her death bed that I would be her that I would help her get this all cleaned up and fixed up and kept in the family,” says Julie Kochmann.
But what Elizabeth Parker wants to do is not just for her family but for the entire community.
The Spanish Lake Garden Tour and Plant Sale is being held on Sunday.
