ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - She`s the dog that was down the drain. It happened Saturday near Cote Brilliante and Arlington when a neighbor heard barking beneath the street.

'We do unfortunately,' admits Debbie Hill of St. Louis Humane Society when asked about the dog in the drain.  'We get a lot of calls of animals stuck either down some type of smaller sewer pipe or down into the storm drains.'

The Humane Society sent someone in pursuit of this pooch.

'He took up a manhole cover on top of the storm drain and basically kind of hung upside down in that hole and looked in and you could not see the little dog at all,' says Hill.

'The rescuers couldn't reach the dog through that drain,' says Patrick Clark.  'So that's why they called MSD who came in and jack-hammered through the street in order to reach this man hole cover.'

'Opened that up and that was actually a 15 foot drop and a little dog was in between two access points,' says Hill.

After three hours of coaxing, the canine was in good hands on her way to the Humane Society for some shots and TLC. She had no id and no microchips to identify her. But they have come up with a title for this tail-wagging stray.

'We have named her Piper in honor for experience,' says Hill.  'Which she handled pretty much like a trooper.'

You could call her the Underground Underdog.
