FENTON, MO (KPLR)-- A 59-year-old man living in a Fenton trailer near Lake Drive woke up to find an intruder in his bedroom Tuesday at 2:00 a.m.
The intruder had a gun in his hand but the property owner managed to fight back and fire two shots. One of those shots hit the suspect in the leg.
Jefferson County authorities identify that suspect as 24-year-old Richard Bates. He was arrested at a hospital after he went there to receive treatment for his gunshot wound.
"It's scary," said Laura Gamble. She lives next to the trailer where the shooting occurred. Gamble says her trailer was broken into about two weeks ago. She says the intruder took her television and credit cards while she was sleeping.
"If I would have woken up I'm afraid I might not still be here," said Gamble. She applauds her neighbor for fighting back and gave this account of what happened.
She says the intruder grabbed her neighbor and asked him for money. Her neighbor told the suspect he didn`t have any and managed to fire two shots. Bates was treated for a minor injury to his leg and was held in the Jefferson County Jail on Tuesday on a $75,000 bond.
Jefferson County Sheriff spokesman Capt. Ron Arnhart said no charges will be filed against the property owner. He said in a shooting like this police must determine the shooter`s frame of mind.
'You are going to have to articulate your actions on why you acted the way that you did,' said Arnhart.
Arnhart says Bates took a gun and other personal items from the trailer but investigators recovered those items when they made the arrest.
Bates is charged with 1st degree Burglary,Theft of a Firearm and Unlawful Use of a Firearm.
