ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR)--The family of a AAA tow truck driver is heartbroken after their loved one is struck and killed on the job allegedly by a hit and run driver. The suspect is in custody.
This all happened Monday night around 9:20pm on Highway 70 eastbound close to the West Florissant exit.
The man who was killed is identified by a family member as David Benes, Sr., 51, from South St. Louis. He leaves behind a wife, an adult son and eight brothers and sisters.
His family says Benes 'was loved by everyone who knew him.'
Officials say Benes had just put out flares and was heading back to his truck on the shoulder to hook up a tow when he was hit by a car from behind.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police tell us the 21 year old driver of the car that hit Benes then took off in the car.
He was caught a short time later at 14th and Mallinckrodt and is in custody.
The suspect was apparently hurt somehow and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Bense`s family tells me the 51 year old had just started working as a tow truck driver for AAA in December and loved his job.
We`re told Bense`s cousin- who also works as a AAA tow truck driver was the one called to the scene after the crash because a driver had been hurt.
That cousin apparently misunderstood the victim`s name and only realized it was his loved one when he arrived at the scene.
Bense`s family tells me his 31st wedding anniversary was coming up soon.
Now instead of planning a party they`re planning a funeral.
No word yet on charges against the alleged hit and run driver.
