Strong storms and winds left damage behind in an area that was hit just last year by a tornado and brought morning traffic to a stand-still. Telephone and power lines came down. Firefighters and police say that happened around 2:30 a.m. and it happened in an instant.
The chaos those winds left behind would last much longer. The lines crossed lanes of Interstate 270 so the highway as well as all ramps were closed for some time. Pattonville and Maryland Heights fire departments were on the scene while Bridgeton police directed traffic.
Missouri Department of Transportation and Ameren workers were cleaning up the mess early Wednesday morning. The northbound lanes were open by 4:15 a.m. The southbound lanes opened soon after.
