Donald Isbell, 82, finally got his high school diploma, and that’s not all. He got to graduate with his granddaughter Mary by his side, making that day in 2011 more special.

The St. Louis native was drafted in 1951 and spent 16 months in Korea and never got to finish high school.

The husband and father of 7 spent his career working as a mechanic and gas station owner. All the family had to do was show he has an honorable discharge.

The Pattonville School District has awarded 100 honorary diplomas to veterans since they started the program in 2002. Any veteran from any school in the United States can apply for the diploma and medal.

Isbell says his diploma has been 60 years in the making, but getting it and the memories that go along with it is all he could've asked for.
