Three people were hospitalized after a late-night fire ripped through a Webster Groves apartment complex. It happened just after 10:30 p.m. Monday on Big Bend Blvd. and Dale. Authorities say good firefighting helped knocked down the blaze before anyone else could be hurt.

But residents were still forced out of their homes in the middle of the night. One resident even says he heard an explosion. When firefighters arrived, they saw the White Bluff Apartments on fire. Commanders on the scene immediately called for a second alarm. Brentwood, Richmond Heights and Clayton all sent help.

One resident said a neighbor woke him and his girlfriend. EMS crews took three people to the hospital with minor smoke inhalation and burns. Two apartments have heavy fire damage. Several others have severe smoke and water damage.

The Red Cross responded while investigators continue to look for the cause of the fire.
