Volunteers collected enough household items to fill two Goodwill trucks. This is the fourth year Wash U and Goodwill have teamed up for the collection drive.

SOUTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KTVI)- Saturday’s record Powerball jackpot winning ticket may have been sold in Florida, but two $1 million winning tickets were sold right here in Missouri. One of those two was sold at a south St. Louis County convenience store, Sam’s Liquor on Kingston Drive.

FOX 2 was there as the winner, a mom with two children, entered the store to check her ticket. She matched all five white balls, but not the Powerball. Lottery officials will verify the ticket and she should win $1 million before taxes. She called her husband who could not believe the news.

The other million-dollar winner was sold in Doniphan, MO, southwest of Poplar Bluff.

The winning numbers for the largest multistate Powerball jackpot were 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 and the Powerball number was 11. The winning ticket was sold at a supermarket in Zephyrhills, Florida.

Saturday’s jackpot was a record $590.5 million, the largest in Powerball history. The previous record was a $587.6 million jackpot split by winners in Arizona and Missouri in November 2012.

The jackpot has a cash value of $376.9 million.

The largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history was $656 million in the Mega Millions game in March 2012. That was split by three tickets sold in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.

Powerball is played in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A single ticket costs $2, and the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 175,223,510.

(CNN) — The winning numbers for the largest multistate Powerball jackpot are: 22, 10,13,14, 52 and the Powerball number is 11.

Saturday’s jackpot is a record $600 million. It marks the largest in Powerball history, surpassing a $587.6 million jackpot split by winners in Arizona and Missouri in November.

The jackpot has a cash value of $376.9 million.

The largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history was $656 million in the Mega Millions game in March 2012. That was split by three tickets sold in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.

That mark will be dwarfed if no one wins the Powerball jackpot Saturday. With no winner, the jackpot will be about $925 million for Wednesday’s drawing, according to Kelly Cripe, spokeswoman for the Texas Lottery, which is part of the multistate lotteries.

The Powerball game is played in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. A single ticket costs $2, and the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 175,223,510.

But before you start dreaming of that mansion in Barbados, allow us to pour an icy bucket of mathematical reality over your head: You almost certainly aren’t going to win.

You stand a better chance of walking onto the golf course and hitting two consecutive holes in one than winning that jackpot.

But that didn’t stop hundreds from driving to the Trex Mart in Dearborn, Missouri, store where one of two winning tickets sold in last year’s $587 million Powerball drawing.

About 100 people an hour were buying tickets at the store.

(CNN) — British police have identified a number of “people of interest” in the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann during a 2007 family vacation in Portugal, London’s Metropolitan Police said Friday.

A review was launched in 2011 in an attempt to find out what happened to the British toddler who vanished from the family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve coast, police told CNN.

Police have been working closely with Portuguese authorities on the case.

“The purpose of the review was to look at the case with fresh eyes and there is always real benefit in doing so. The review has further identified both investigative and forensic opportunities to support the Portuguese,” Detective Chief Superintendent Hamish Campbell said.

The girl was a few days shy of her fourth birthday when she disappeared.

(CNN) — Actor Edward Furlong tried to hide, but ended up caught and behind bars in California for allegedly violating a protective order filed against him by an ex-girlfriend, authorities said.

West Hollywood, California, deputies responded at 5:44 p.m. Thursday to a call about a possible violation of a protection order, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Friday in a news release.

They found the suspect — the 35-year-old actor best known for his role in “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” — hiding on a nearby property. He was arrested and brought to a sheriff’s substation in West Hollywood, authorities said.

After his breakthrough role in 1991 alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger, Furlong went on to play roles in a number of movies, including “American History X,” and TV projects, such as “CSI-NY.”

LOS ANGELES (CNN) — A cache of e-mails believed lost when Michael Jackson’s last manager’s laptop disappeared could become key evidence in the wrongful death trial against AEG Live.

Lawyers for Michael Jackson’s mother and three children don’t know what they’ll find in Frank DiLeo’s e-mails, but they are hoping it will support their contention that DiLeo was beholden to the concert promoter and not to Jackson.

Jackson changed managers twice in the last three months of his life. In late March 2009, he hired Leonard Rowe — one of his father’s friends — to replace Tohme Tohme, the manager who initially negotiated the deal with AEG for his “This Is It” tour.

Jackson lawyers argue that AEG Live forced Jackson to take DiLeo, who had worked for him off and on for decades, as his manager in May 2009 because they did not want to work with Rowe.

Their contention is part of their larger argument that AEG Live executives were liable for Jackson’s death because they hired, retained or supervised Dr. Conrad Murray, the physician convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

AEG counters that it was Jackson who chose and hired Murray, not them. AEG lawyers argue that Jackson was responsible for his own death and that drug addiction led to his bad decisions.

The coroner ruled his death, which came near the end of preparations for a series of comeback concerts, was caused by an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol that Murray was using to treat Jackson’s insomnia.

AEG Live contends its executives had no way of knowing the doctor was using propofol in the privacy of Jackson’s bedroom.

The Jacksons are seeking billions of dollars in damages, equal to what Michael Jackson might have earned if he had not died on June 25, 2009. The Los Angeles trial began three weeks ago and is expected to continue into July.

The lawsuit contends AEG Live ignored warning signs about Jackson’s health in his last weeks, and instead of getting him help they pressured Jackson and Murray to have him at rehearsals. DiLeo would have been part of that pressure, they contend.

“Get him a bucket of chicken,” DiLeo said on June 19, 2009, in reply to concerns about Jackson’s weight loss, makeup artist Karen Faye testified last week. “It was such a cold response, it broke my heart,” Faye said through tears.

The next day — June 20, 2009 — DiLeo left a voice mail on Murray’s cell phone. “I’m sure you’re aware he had an episode last night. He’s sick. Today’s Saturday. Tomorrow, I’m on my way back. I’m not going to continue my trip. I think you need to get a blood test on him. We got to see what he’s doing?”

DiLeo’s e-mails were recovered after what the judge called “a lot of red tape and kind of cloudiness,” that included the AEG’s lawyers also representing the estate of DiLeo, who died in 2011, in fighting the Jacksons’ subpoena for them.

“Because (DiLeo’s widow) didn’t have litigation counsel, we’re representing her for the limited purposes of responding to that subpoena,” AEG’s lead lawyer, Marvin Putnam, told the judge.

Soon after an Ohio court ordered DiLeo’s estate to give his laptop and e-mails to the Jackson lawyers, the AEG lawyers — in their other capacity representing the DiLeo estate — reported that they could not locate the computer or e-mails.

Jackson lawyers, however, learned that the DiLeo estate’s previous lawyer — Pennsylvania lawyer David Regoli — kept a copy of the e-mail files. For the past several weeks, however, the AEG lawyers argued he had no authority to provide them to the Jacksons’ lawyers for use in the case against AEG.

But in a phone call to the court this week, Regoli said he advised DiLeo’s widow, Linda DiLeo, that “in my opinion, it was a conflict” for AEG’s lawyers — from the Los Angeles firm O’Melveny and Myers — to represent her in the matter.

“She said that she never signed anything with O’Melveny and Myers to authorize them to represent her, and as of this moment they are not representing her anymore,” Regoli said.

Linda DiLeo then rehired Regoli, which allows him to send the e-mails on to the Jacksons — after removing any that are personal or not relevant to the case.

“I think I can give the court my assurances that I’ll go through the documents that I have and I’ll go through the e-mails, and anything that is related to the subpoena, I would obviously turn over,” Regoli said.

As for the missing laptop, there was a simple explanation. Linda DiLeo “had told me her daughter had given it to a friend who needed a computer,” Regoli said. “It wasn’t a very new computer.”

While the Jackson lawyers wanted to explore how AEG’s lawyers came to represent the DiLeo estate in Ohio, the judge declined exploring the matter.

“All we know right now they’re not representing her, and that’s enough for us,” Judge Yvette Palazuelos said.

The trial’s fourth week starts Monday morning with AEG’s chief counsel, Shawn Trell, on the witness stand. Jackson lawyers are expected to grill him about the contract negotiations with Michael Jackson and Murray.

(CNN) — A meteoroid struck the surface of the moon recently, causing an explosion that was visible on Earth without the aid of a telescope, NASA reported Friday. But don’t be alarmed if you didn’t see it; it only lasted about a second.

“It exploded in a flash nearly 10 times as bright as anything we’ve ever seen before,” said Bill Cooke, of NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office.

NASA astronomers have been monitoring the moon for the past eight years, looking for explosions caused by meteoroids hitting the lunar surface. It’s part of a program to find new fields of space debris that could hit Earth. NASA says it sees hundreds of detectable lunar meteoroid impacts a year.

None however can match the size of the explosion they say they saw March 17. NASA says the meteoroid was about 40 kilograms and less than a meter wide, and it hit the moon’s surface at 56,000 mph. It glowed like a 4th magnitude star, NASA says, thanks to an explosion equivalent to 5 tons of TNT.

“It jumped right out at me, it was so bright,” said Ron Suggs of the Marshall Space Flight Center.

Cooke says Earth was pelted by meteoroids at about the same time, but they hit the moon because it has no atmosphere to protect it.

“We’ll be keeping an eye out for signs of a repeat performance next year when the Earth-moon system passes through the same region of space,” Cooke said.

If you’re wondering how there can be an explosion on the moon, without oxygen, NASA has the answer for you. It says the flash of light comes not from any type of combustion — as we typically think of explosions — but rather by the glowing molten rock at the impact site.

(CNN) — A man arrested at Cannes Film Festival after firing a gun loaded with blanks during a live TV interview is due to appear in court Sunday, Cannes police said.

Canal+ was interviewing Christoph Waltz, who won the Academy Award for best supporting actor in “Django Unchained,” and actor Daniel Auteuil when a man fired two shots from a starter pistol on Friday, according to authorities and the French television station.

The man allegedly had a dummy grenade in one hand, and footage and images of the incident showed Waltz and Auteuil being taken offstage and attendees scrambling for cover.

The 43-year-old suspect, who fired twice into the air, told police he believed in God and wanted to change the world, a Cannes police spokesman said Saturday.

He has been examined by a psychiatrist who concluded that he “is not mentally ill,” the spokesman said.

Many police officers were present at the time of the shooting and the suspect was caught immediately, he said.

The court is expected to consider the case against the man, who remains in custody but whose name has not been made public, on Sunday, he said.

‘Fake grenade’

The incident, which occurred on the Canal+ set along the popular Promenade de la Croisette — the main boulevard in Cannes — briefly interrupted the show.

But Canal+ anchor Michel Denisot came back on the air a short time later and told viewers: “The shots fired were blanks and the grenade was fake. That’s what we know.”

No injuries were reported.

Pictures of the arrest obtained by The Hollywood Reporter showed police wrestling the man to the ground.

The man said to a woman next to him, ‘If I were you, I wouldn’t stick around here’,” Denisot later told France 24.

It was far from the typical scripted fare of the Cannes Film Festival, where chaos plays out on screen and not among the audience.

The annual festival brings together the rich and famous from around the world for movie screenings and glittering parties.

Stolen jewels

Earlier the same day, police in Nice said that more than $1 million in jewels belonging to the Swiss firm Chopard had been stolen from a hotel room in Cannes.

Chopard later said in a statement that the value of the stolen pieces was “far lower than those in the figures circulating in the media.”

The theft of the jewels occurred Thursday night, on the second day of the festival, which opened Wednesday and runs through May 26.

Commandant Bernard Mascarelli, of the Nice police, said the jewelry was stolen from a room in the Suite Novotel hotel on Boulevard Carnot in Cannes.

A Chopard employee who was staying in the room left it for several hours to go to dinner, he said. She returned to discover the whole safe containing the jewels had been unscrewed and taken away.

No detailed description has yet been given of the stolen jewels, but a Chopard spokeswoman said they were not part of the firm’s “Red Carpet Collection 2013″ and were not due to be worn by any actresses in Cannes.

Chopard, which is an official sponsor of the festival, has provided the Palme d’Or trophy awarded to the director of the best feature film for the past 15 years. The trophy features a 24-carat gold palm attached to a piece of cut crystal.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Privacy concerns surrounding Google Glass are growing rampant. Eight Congressmen even joined in on the conversation on Thursday, fearing that the cyborg-like technology could be too invasive.

Google’s response: You’ll know when someone wearing Glass is being sketchy.

In one of the most provocative moments of this week’s Google I/O developers conference, Glass engineers fielded audience questions regarding privacy concerns. Google was clearly prepared to discuss the topic.

“The process for taking a picture or video has clear social queues,” explained Steve Lee, Glass’ product director. “When Glass is active, the display lights up. Because of that, you can rest assured I’m not recording you.”

Lee was quick to point out that privacy issues surrounding Glass had been considered a top priority by his team since day one.

Glass engineer Charles Mendis noted that Google’s official policies for Glass app development are designed to address privacy issues. For example, Google forbids app developers from shutting off the display while Glass is active.

But Mendis also noted that simple awareness of surroundings will play a key part in privacy.

“If I want to record a video with Glass, I have to be staring at you,” said Mendis. “And if you’re human, you’ll notice me staring at you.”

Of course, someone could hack Glass to disable the screen — Google even led a how-to on hacking Glass, though the company was quick to note that hacking will void a user’s warranty, and shutting off the screen was not among the discussed topics. From the sounds of it, Google would not allow such an app to be distributed through official channels.

Google’s assurances haven’t convinced some members of Congress, however. A bi-partisan committee on privacy sent a letter to Google this week expressing concerns about Glass.

“We are curious whether this new technology could infringe on the privacy of the average American,” the letter states.

The eight “unanswered questions” the group posed focused mainly on data collection and protection: How will Google avoid “unintentionally collecting data” without consent, as Google admitted its Street View data-collection cars did? What type of data will Google collect?

The committee also asked whether Google plans to implement facial recognition technology, and if so, whether people be able to opt-out.

Google has “experimented” with facial recognition, execs said at I/O on Thursday, but that isn’t in the company’s current plan for Glass. Still, Google stopped short of saying it’s not in future plans.

Despite lawmakers and pundits’ concerns, intrigue related to Glass made the technology the clear star of this year’s I/O conference. Nearly every discussion dedicated to the headset saw serpentine lines of attendees trying to cram their way into packed conference rooms.

Public paranoia wasn’t the only focus. Some attendees talked with excitement about Glass’ possibility, while others, including Google’s own employees, said they wouldn’t be caught dead wearing Glass.

Google also announced seven new apps for the emerging technology, which include custom-tailored software from the like of Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Evernote and Elle Magazine. CNN also released an app for news updates.

Glass’ first game even surfaced at the conference in the form of Ice Breaker, which is a scavenger hunt of sorts that takes full advantage of the on-board technology. The game requires you to use Glass to find another Glass user, snap a picture with that person, and earn points for doing so. It’s a little dumb, a little pointless, but undeniably fun.

Although these big-name apps provide immediate, tangible examples of how Glass can be used, smaller developers showed off many of their innovations as well.

Google says that Glass remains a test-bed for software developers and an unfinished product. By the time Glass is ready for prime time, it’s a safe bet Google will make some changes with privacy in mind.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — Boomers lost a significant chunk of their retirement nest eggs in the recession, but it was members of Generation X who were really hit the hardest, according to a report released Thursday.

If they don’t start paying off debt and saving more, Gen Xers (those between the ages of 38 and 47) and younger Boomers (those in their late 40s to mid-50s) are on track to retire financially worse off than the generations before them, according to analysis from the Pew Charitable Trusts, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit.

“Many younger Americans were already behind in saving for retirement, and suddenly millions of them were out of work or owned homes worth far less than they had been just a few years earlier,” the report said.

Including Social Security benefits, Gen Xers are projected to have enough money in retirement to replace only half of their annual pre-retirement earnings. Financial planners recommend retirement savers aim to replace 70% to 100% of pre-retirement income.

Between 2007 and 2010, members of Gen X saw their median net worth sink 45% from $75,077 to $41,600. That’s compared to a drop of around 25% for both younger Baby Boomers and older Boomers, between the ages 58 and 67.

By the end of the recession, Gen X held investments, retirement plans and savings with a median value of just $14,500, down from $19,382 in 2007. Younger Boomers had median savings of $32,135 and older Boomers had $55,850, according to the report.

And while only two-thirds of Gen Xers owned homes in 2010, those who did saw their median home equity plummet by 27% during the past three years, Pew said. In comparison, the home equity of younger Baby Boomers fell 14%, and older Boomers saw a 22% drop.

Gen Xers were also plagued by significantly higher debt levels, including mortgages, auto loans, credit card and student loan debt — much of which was accumulated in the years leading up to the recession. In 2010, Gen X had a median debt level of more than $80,000, while younger Baby Boomers carried about $60,000 and older Boomers had less than $40,000.

Younger Boomers, between 48 and 57 years old, are slightly better off with a median expected income replacement rate of about 60%, although it pales in comparison to the roughly 80% projected for their older counterparts.

“Unless this path is altered, younger Baby Boomers and Gen Xers may face a real possibility of downward mobility in their Golden Years,” said Diana Elliott, research manager for Pew’s economic mobility project.

Pew’s study did not look at retirement security for anyone born after 1975, which leaves out the youngest Gen Xers and Generation Y, also commonly dubbed the “Millennials,” who were born between the early 1980s and early 2000s. The country’s youngest workers, who are saddled with historic levels of student loan debt and are starting their careers in an unfriendly job market, likely face similar levels of retirement insecurity.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — When Facebook made its stock market debut last May, Barry Graubart was set to buy $10,000 worth of shares in the initial public offering. But due to Nasdaq’s trading glitches, his buy order never went through.

A year later, with Facebook’s stock down 30% from its IPO price of $38, the digital media professional is relieved.

“In hindsight, I guess I was one of the lucky ones,” said Graubart, 48, who had placed an order to buy Facebook shares at $41 per share or below through his Charles Schwab trading account on May 18, 2012. “Watching the stock’s performance after the IPO, I felt relieved to have missed out.”

Facebook’s IPO was one of the most widely anticipated in history. It was a company that both Wall Street professionals and the average investor understood and used every day. But Facebook’s first day on the market was chaotic, to say the least, botched by technical malfunctions at Nasdaq, including a late opening and delayed order execution messages.

Amid that chaos, Graubart’s order went unfulfilled and expired at the end of the trading day. A spokesperson for Charles Schwab said “the issues were industry-wide and not specific to Schwab, but we understood people’s frustration and worked with clients on a case by case basis to resolve problems as quickly as possible.”

But Graubart doesn’t regret the fact that his order failed.

After watching Facebook shares slump below their IPO price to just $32 in the first few days of trading, Graubart initially figured he would wait until they dropped to about $25 before he considered buying them again. That happened just a couple of weeks later. But Graubart still sat tight.

“In the aftermath of the IPO, there was a lot of pressure on the stock,” he said. “There weren’t any compelling drivers to short it or make it a long-term buy at that time, so I decided to sit back and watch.”

Graubart said he is now invested in Facebook through some mutual funds he owns, but he still hasn’t bought individual shares of the company.

Graubart, an Irvington, N.Y. resident, said he was initially attracted to Facebook because he had never seen a product gain adoption as quickly or as at large a scale. But now, he’s looking for Facebook to show it can make money on its more than a billion users around world, particularly the growing number that access the social media service on their smartphones and tablets.

“The management has been doing a great job focusing on how to monetize from its mobile users in the last six months, but they still haven’t figured it out completely,” he said.

For now, Graubart is a believer in LinkedIn when it comes to social media stocks.

“LinkedIn serves a distinct business-to-business need,” said Graubart, who first bought LinkedIn in the fall of 2011 around $80 per share and has watched the stock more than double since. “They’re able to generate a ton of revenue from people willing to pay for their premium service, from recruiters to job hunters to those in business development and sales.”

While Graubart considers himself fortunate to have missed out on buying Facebook shares last year, Tom Boutell isn’t sweating the fact that he did buy on the first day.

Boutell bought shares of Facebook at $42 through his E*Trade account on the day of the IPO. Still, he’s confident that the stock will eventually get back to, and surpass, the IPO price.

“I bought the stock because I believe it will eventually be worth more than I paid for it,” he said. “That time has not come yet, but it’s a long-term purchase.”

SAN FRANCISCO (CNNMoney) — Google spent the second half of the 2000s turning Google Talk into the de facto replacement for AOL Instant Messenger. Then, over the past few years, Google stopped paying attention to it altogether.

During this span, when, where and how we chat has changed considerably. Google has responded with a spate of new communication technologies. Both inside and outside the company, chat options are fractured.

Google’s newest product — Hangouts — isn’t fundamentally different than other current cross-platform messaging apps, but it unifies many of Google’s own products in a smart way.

For those who have been faithful to Gmail Chat/Google Talk over the years, Hangouts will be a big change, but it still preserves much of what you love.

For starters, Hangouts is linked to your Google+ account, but thankfully, you’re not forced to interact with the social network if you don’t want to. And if all your friends are still using the older Talk, or Gmail Chat or Google+ Messenger apps, you will still be able to chat.

A big philosophical shift, however, comes in the form of presence. Whereas Google Talk focused itself around who was online or offline, Hangouts is an experience that is built around the philosophy that you’re always available, thanks to the fact that many of us now have smartphones. The app is not only available on Chrome and Android, but also — finally — iOS.

When you leave the chat, the conversation doesn’t just disappear. It’s like text messaging. If you’re not actively engaging with hangouts when a new message arrives, it sits in the thread, waiting until the moment you return. For some, the prospect of not being able to fully log off is a harrowing shift. For those comfortable with the “always on” culture, it’s a welcome, and much needed addition.

True to it’s moniker, Hangouts is also built around the concept of group chats, which is a big reason why Google isn’t as concerned with your availability status. The change helps keep conversations fluid. Icons clearly indicate when you’ve left a message, and when you’re actively moving in and out of a conversation.

It’s easy to share images on Hangouts, jump to a video chat or overwhelm a friend with emojis. It’s fast, simple, and easy to launch a new chat. No matter what device you’re using, the experience is always the same. All messages sync between all devices and features are consistent. You still can’t share video files, but that’s one of the few limitations.

Hangouts still has some work to do in other areas if it really wants to trump the likes of Facebook, Apple, Microsoft (via Skype), GroupMe and WhatsApp.

Though you can send messages to any of your friends — friends using Hangouts, that is — at any time, it would still be nice to have some idea when they’re using the mobile version or the Chrome version of the app. There is an indicator built into the hangouts UI to show when people are active, but when and how it is used for contacts differs upon what app/service they’re using.

Then there’s SMS. Hangouts is particularly good at pulling together Google’s different messaging services and facilitating group chats, but Google Voice and SMS integration are nowhere to be found. Both Facebook’s Messenger app and Apple’s iMessage already integrate SMS, so the absence of this feature from Hangouts is conspicuous.

The biggest question mark here is the fate of Gmail chat/Google Talk. For the time being, existing users of those services will be left alone. But will they eventually be forced over to Hangouts against their will? Google said nary a word about it yesterday, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

But overall, Hangouts is a much needed revamp of Google’s chat service that will serve the company well going forward.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — The class of 2013 is in for a rude awakening this graduation season.

Between ballooning student loans, credit cards and money owed to family members, they are facing an average $35,200 in college-related debt, a Fidelity survey of 750 college graduates shows.

And for half of this year’s graduates, the amount of debt they racked up while in school comes as a shock.

“We’re tending to find people are still surprised at the level of debt they’re graduating with, which suggests we still have a long way to go in terms of having conversations about planning for college, saving for college and figuring out the best place to go [to college],” said Keith Bernhardt, vice president of college planning at Fidelity Investments.

The bulk of the class of 2013′s debt is in government loans, with graduates owing an average of $26,000. They also had an average of $19,000 in private loans, $18,000 in state loans, $13,000 in personal and family loans and $3,000 in credit card debt.

After realizing the extent of their debt, 39% said they would have done things differently — like saving earlier, more thoroughly researching financial aid or looking for ways to save more and spend less while at school — that’s up from 25% in 2011.

A small group, or 12% of graduates, regretted their decisions entirely, saying their college education didn’t justify the debt burden.

But now they’re forced to face reality. Half of respondents said tackling their student debt is a financial priority, and half said it will take them more than nine years to become debt-free.

The majority, or 92%, say they will pay back their debt using income from their job, 25% said they will get help from their parents or family, 24% will use their savings and 21% will get a second job. About 7% of graduates don’t plan on ever being able to entirely pay off their loans.

Others started taking action earlier to try to soften the blow. About 85% of college graduates contributed their own money toward college costs — with 27% reporting that they contributed more than $10,000. And 57% said they chose their major specifically because they thought it would land them a higher-paying job.

(CNN) — French President Francois Hollande signed into law Saturday a bill allowing same-sex couples to marry and adopt.

It comes a day after the nation’s top court, the Constitutional Council, ruled that the bill adheres to the constitution.

In a last-ditch attempt to stop the bill from becoming law, conservative opponents had filed a legal challenge after lawmakers approved it.

Passing legislation to allow same-sex marriage was one of Hollande’s election pledges in campaigning last year.

In a statement Friday, he recognized the controversial nature of the bill, but said France was able to listen to and respect different points of view.

“I’m convinced that with the passage of time this law will be seen for what it is: progress for equality and for freedom,” he said.

The move was opposed by many conservatives and the Catholic Church in France, prompting hundreds of thousands of people to turn out for protest marches in Paris as politicians debated the bill.

Many conservatives and the Catholic Church opposed the move, prompting hundreds of thousands of protesters to march in Paris as politicians debated the bill.

The new law, published Saturday morning after Hollande’s signature, admits France to a small but growing club.

It is the ninth country in Europe to allow same sex marriage.

Lawmakers in New Zealand this year made it the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to legalize same-sex marriage. The law is set to be enacted later this year.

Uruguayan lawmakers have also approved a measure allowing same-sex marriage. It awaits the signature of Uruguay’s president, who has indicated he supports it.

If the laws in New Zealand and Uruguay are enacted as expected, the count of nations allowing same-sex marriage will rise to 14.

The first same-sex couples walked down the aisle in the Netherlands in 2001, with others following suit in Canada, South Africa, Belgium and Spain. Argentina was the first Latin American nation to legalize such marriages, in 2010. Other countries on the list are Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Portugal and Sweden.

Many countries remain split over the issue. A Brazilian court this week issued a directive removing a barrier that had limited same-sex marriage, but no bill has made it through Congress.

Legislators in the United Kingdom are also weighing proposals to legalize same-sex marriage. Lawmakers in Australia voted against a bill to legalize same-sex marriage last September. A poll for the advocacy group Australian Marriage Equality indicated that 64% of those surveyed “support marriage equality.”

In the United States, the question went before the Supreme Court and justices are deliberating over the matter.

Twelve U.S. states and the District of Columbia have legalized same-sex marriages. On the other side, many states have specific laws blocking same-sex couples from legally marrying.

(CNN) — North Korea launched three short-range guided missiles into the sea off the Korean Peninsula’s east coast Saturday; South Korea’s semi-official news agency Yonhap cited the South Korean Defense Ministry as saying.

The ministry said it had detected two launches in the morning, followed by another in the afternoon, Yonhap reported.

The missiles were fired in a northeasterly direction, away from South Korean waters, the ministry said.

South Korea has beefed up monitoring on North Korea and is maintaining a high-level of readiness to deal with any risky developments, the ministry added, according to Yonhap.

According to the Arms Control Association, a U.S.-based organization, short-range guided missiles are generally classified as those traveling less than 1,000 kilometers (about 620 miles.)

Tensions in the region have eased in recent days since a fraught period last month that included near daily North Korean threats of war.

U.S. and South Korean officials feared at that time that Kim Jong Un’s regime was planning to carry out a test launch of longer-range ballistic missiles, believed to be Musudans. The South Korean government says they have a maximum range of 3,500 kilometers (2,175 miles).

Andrew Salmon, a journalist and author based in the South Korean capital, Seoul, said North Korea’s reported launch of short-range missiles Saturday should not cause the same degree of concern as the launch of a satellite or medium-range Musudan rocket.

“It’s a short-range tactical weapon. If any other country launched this kind of weapon, it’s a routine test, nobody would be too worried. It’s really simply because it’s North Korea doing this that it raises concerns,” he said.

The situation is much less tense in the region than it was last month, Salmon said.

“The North Koreans have significantly de-escalated their bellicosity and their rhetoric since the end of April,” he said. “The South Korean government, I suspect, will not be strongly condemnatory of this test because right now they are very, very keen to get the North Koreans to the negotiating table.”

The recent tensions flared after the North’s long-range rocket launch in December and underground nuclear test in February, both of which were widely condemned.

Pyongyang’s fiery rhetoric intensified in March as the U.N. Security Council voted to tighten sanctions on the regime following the nuclear test.

Annual U.S.-South Korean military drills in South Korea also fueled the North’s anger, especially when the United States carried out displays of strength that included nuclear-capable B2 stealth bombers.

North Korea is demanding recognition as a nuclear power, something the United States refuses to countenance.

Last month’s crisis resulted in the closure of the Kaesong Industrial Complex, the last major symbol of inter-Korean cooperation.

FOREST PARK (KTVI)-Thousands of people and their pooches enjoyed a day in Forest Park at the 21st annual Bark in the Park. The event features a pancake breakfast, a 5K run, 1 Mile walk, and a pet festival. Proceeds from the event benefit the Humane Society of Missouri’s Animal Cruelty Fund.

This year’s event mascot is Trooper, a dog who has made a miraculous recovery after being abused and dragged behind a truck last November. He led the Walk for Animals with his entourage of rescue animals.

Trooper has come a long way from those days in November when many feared he wouldn’t survive. Few could have looked ahead to Saturday, when he was pulling his handlers around the park.

“Definitely not,” Anne McLaughlin of the Missouri Humane Society told us. “He was such a frail little puppy with injuries all over his little body, and to see him now, the beautiful animal he’s become, he doesn’t think anything happened to him. He thinks he’s totally normal.”

FOX 2 is a proud sponsor of the event.
