ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - Susan Miller says a recent phone call started harmlessly enough. The person on the line claimed to be from the Better Business Bureau. He had an alarming message.
The man proceeded to tell her that someone hacked her computer and was stealing money from people by sending out email messages from her account.
“I kind of giggled. He said, ‘I don’t know why you’re laughing.’ He said, ‘it’s going to cost you like $1,500 to get out of this.’ I said, ‘I think I’ll call my Better Business Bureau.’ He said, ‘oh no, you can’t do that,’" said Susan Miller.
Miller wouldn’t be scammed, but admits it could be convincing if your guard wasn’t up.
“They did know things and I don’t know where they got the information," she said.
“The Better Business Bureau isn’t in the business of helping people repair their computers,” said BBB representative Susan Miller.
The Better Business Bureau’s Chris Thetford said this is a new take an old scam. In fact, Fox 2 has reported on scammers posing as Microsoft Windows tech support in the past. Falling for scams of this nature can cost you money and possibly make you a victim of identity theft.
“If you’re a consumer that is having trouble with their computer, you should probably reach out to the people you bought your computer from or from the software providers you’re using on your computer,” Thetford said.
Susan Miller wasn’t having computer trouble when she got the call and avoided trouble by being alert.
“Just be aware. Don’t ever give them any information. Don’t give them your name,” added Miller.
To prevent yourself from falling for a scam like this, here some more information from the BBB and Federal Trade Commission to keep in mind.
Never give control of your computer to a third party who calls you out of the blue.
Never provide your credit card or financial information to someone who calls and claims to be from tech support. Never give your password on the phone. No legitimate organization calls you and asks for your password.
