ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – Volunteers braved the cold Saturday to deliver hundreds of turkeys and all the trimmings to the door steps of hundreds of north St. Louis families.

The effort went way beyond free turkeys. The food drive was organized prior to the event. Turkeys, canned goods, stuffing, and etc. were bagged and sorted by volunteers the night prior to the turkey giveaway. Hundreds of volunteers and several other dignitaries in St. Louis participated in the event. Volunteers are separated into groups and walk through various neighborhoods in Missouri and Illinois hand-delivering Thanksgiving meals to approximately 2,500 families.

Demetrious Johnson, a former Mizzou and NFL football player, has been giving back to the community for years helping those in need.

Saturday morning a truck full of turkeys rolled into the Clinton-Peabody Housing Complex spreading some holiday cheer." I grew up in the projects, we had to stand in line, I made a promise if I ever got an opportunity to help someone, I would," said Johnson

Johnson says his charitable foundation has spear-headed the turkey giveaway for 24 years, giving away thousands of turkeys to families in Illinois and Missouri.
