CHICAGO, IL (KTVI) – Illinois' Republican Senator Mark Kirk conceded Tuesday night to Democrat Tammy Duckworth at an election night watch party outside of Chicago.

"I have called and congratulated Tammy Duckworth" said Kirk.  "I invited her to lunch at the Billy Goat Tavern" he announced to boisterous applause.  "I want to show the people of Illinois that we can still work together" he said.

Kirk trailed Duckworth in a number of recent polls, but had brushed them off saying numbers aren't favorable for Republicans running in traditionally blue states, especially during Presidential election years.

Kirk served one full term in the Senate, elected in 2010 after filling the remainder of Barack Obama's seat in 2008.
