CREVE COEUR, MO (KPLR) - Police took a 71-year-old man into custody after an incident at southbound I-270 and Ladue road at around 1pm Wednesday afternoon. He was walking with what appeared to be a high powered rifle. The weapon ended up being a pellet gun.
The man asked police to kill him during a half-hour standoff with tactical officers. They were able to set up a perimeter and eventually talk him into giving up the gun and going to the hospital. The man is dealing with mental health issues. The suspect is being charged in this incident.
"Imagine what this looked like from 100 yards away (which was the officer's vantage point)," writes Capt. Tim Koncki of the Creve Coeur Police Department.
MoDOT reports that the incident closed the road. An ambulance and several police vehicles could be seen in the area during the incident.
The road has been cleared. MoDOT reports that the road is now open to the public.
The identity of the person in police custody has not yet been released.
