Infant dies in north city house fire

cvsie-vuaaapj7tST. LOUIS (KPLR) – One child is dead and 4 others, including 2 children, were hospitalized Wednesday morning following an overnight fire.

The fire began around 3:30 a.m. in the 5100 block of Cates Avenue. The two-story residence is believed to have been a boarding house.

Six adults and three children were in the home when the fire started. Two of the children, a 1-year-old male and his 4-year-old brother, were taken to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital.  The 1-year-old is listed in fair condition and the 4-year-old is listed in serious condition, due to heavy smoke inhalation.  The third child, a 9-month-old infant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Family members say the dead infant and the two children   injured were cousins

The fire started on the second floor, Jenkerson said. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Authorities said there were working smoke alarms in the home.

No firefighters were injured while responding to the fire.

Terrell Moment, who lives in that apartment with his wife, said he and his wife got one of kids out of the home and firefighters rescued the other.

The mother of the hospitalized toddlers and her boyfriend were taken to the hospital and listed in serious condition.
