Carjacking suspect fatally shot by officer, following police pursuit

ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – Monday night around 10:30 pm a police pursuit ended with the fatal shooting of a carjacking suspect in the 4100 block of Lee in North St. Louis. The fatal shooting was preceded by a call for officer in need of aid following a police pursuit of a vehicle from St. Louis County into North St. Louis.

Captain Mary Warnecke of the St. Louis police department and St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar held a press conference just after 1 am Tuesday morning stating that a St. Louis County officer had spotted a vehicle wanted from a carjacking in Affton. A pursuit was initiated by the officer that eventually included law enforcement officers from St. Louis city, Jennings and Ferguson.

Warnecke said the suspect vehicle stopped on Lee Avenue, and several subjects exited the car.  One of the suspects was wearing a mask, gloves and was armed with a handgun.  That suspect pointed the weapon at the officer, who fired several shots striking the suspect.  He later died from his injuries at the scene.

The other suspects fled the scene on foot.

Chief Belmar added that the vehicle in question was taken in carjack from the 5100 block of Waldo Avenue in Affton Monday morning at 2 am when 2 armed subjects wearing mask and gloves stole the car from a resident.

Belmar said that the pursuit had injured 2 officers and a man and woman in a crash with a St. Louis police cruiser and another vehicle at Lillian and Union. The officers and civilians suffered minor non-life threatening injuries.

A joint investigation is being conducted by both departments.

Police are asking anyone with knowledge of the incident or suspects to please call the St. Louis Homicide Division at 314-444-5371 or CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS.
