Local non-profit offers free legal services to domestic violence survivors

ST. LOUIS (KPLR) – Legal Services of Eastern Missouri (LSEM) provides free legal representation to low-income clients across 21 counties. Its ‘Lasting Solutions Program’ focuses on helping survivors of domestic violence.

“Domestic violence doesn’t look like anyone,” said Holly Yoakum, managing attorney with the Lasting Solutions Program at LSEM. “Domestic violence is transcendent when it comes to victims. We have (clients) of all races, sexual orientations, gender identities.”

Domestic violence is defined as repeated assault and coercive behavior by one household member towards another. In many cases, LSEM assists victims of domestic violence with securing orders of protection against their abusers.

According to Laura Halfmann, a social worker with Lasting Solutions, the program also helps clients secure necessities like housing, transportation, and other resources that may help them move forward.

“Some people leave their homes, literally, with the clothes on their back,” Halfmann said.

On any given day, the Lasting Solutions Program has 450 open cases.
