Thousands sign petition to change park’s name to honor Officer Blake Snyder

ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) – Over 3,000 people have signed a petition to change the name of Clydesdale Park to the name of a slain St. Louis County Police Officer. Officer Blake Snyder was shot and killed on October 6th near that location. The request to the St Louis County Parks & Recreation Advisory Board wants to change the name of the park to, “Blake Snyder Memorial Park.”

Dawn Oppy, the organizer of the petition drive, says that Steve Stenger’s office has invited her to the county council meeting Tuesday night in Clayton.  He will sign an executive order to change the name of the park.  She writes on the petition:

“Officer Blake Snyder was a true hero, who selflessly put his own life on the line to protect our families. Let’s honor him by keeping his name alive in our community!”

St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger’s office says their legal department is reviewing the legalities of renaming Clydesdale Park in honor of Officer Snyder. The belief by Stenger is that he can rename the park by using an executive order, and he doesn’t need a council vote or the petition drive. However, the petition drive prompted him to look into this. Stenger is moving forward rapidly to get this done and would plan a ceremony once the order is written.

Officer Snyder and his partner were responding to a disturbance call in the early morning hours on October 6 at a home in the 10700 block of Arno Drive in Green Park. The accused shooter, Trent Forster, was seated inside a car parked outside the residence when Snyder and the other officer approached. Forster allegedly shot Snyder when the officer asked to see his hands. Snyder’s partner returned fire, hitting Forster several times. Forster was hospitalized and has since been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.

Blake Snyder was laid to rest Thursday, October 13 following a service at St. Louis Family Church in Chesterfield.

The BackStoppers organization is continuing to raise money across the region for Officer Snyder’s family.
