MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO (KPLR) - A man successfully fought off a carjacking suspect who ambushed him, and even shot at him, Maryland Heights Police said.
Maryland Heights Det. Sgt. Richard White said the suspect, 15, approached the man in the parking lot of Pheasant Run Apartments north of Dorsett Road Sunday night shortly after 8 pm.
“He pointed a weapon at him - a pistol - and he demanded his car keys,” White said.
The man refused to turn over his keys and wallet. The suspect then shot at him – twice – but missed.
The suspect then ran away and entered a red Ford Mustang with four people, all teens, inside. The car sped off.
The victim provided police a detailed description of the getaway vehicle. Dispatchers alerted neighboring municipalities, and a short time later, Creve Coeur Police pulled over the vehicle on the 12300 block of Olive Road.
The alleged shooter was arrested.
“He was so appreciative. How quickly we caught the guys,” White said.
The others occupants of the vehicle ranged in age from 15 to 18, and cooperated with police.
Police said it is a remarkable the victim was not injured.
“For a 15 year-old to have a gun and go out – purposely to go out and rob someone, and to take it a step further and actually shoot at him twice, it could have ended with horrible results,” he said.
“The guy could have been killed.”
Pheasant Run management said they are grateful he was unharmed.
“I’m sure shaken up a little bit, definitely. It’s a very quiet [place]. I’ve never had anything like this the entire time I’ve been here,” Property Manager Nicole Viehmann said.
The teen suspect has been remanded to St. Louis County Family Court. Charges are pending.
