Family fishing trip nearly turns into disaster

NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO (KPLR) – A family fishing trip nearly turned into disaster Saturday night on the Mississippi River.

The family was between mile marker 2 and 3 on the river south of Highway 367 and north of the Chain of Rocks Bridge when they developed trouble with their boat.  The boat took on water and sank into the river throwing 6 family members into the river.  One member of the family was able to make a 911 call from a mobile phone before being set adrift in the Mississippi River.

The distress call went out at 8 pm, with the Spanish Lake Fire Protection District responding to the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area boat ramp to launch rescue boat.

Another boater on the river heard the distress call and came to the rescue of the family pulling the family members out the water to safety.

The boat docked at the boat ramp at the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area where they were checked out by EMTs.

The family was very shaken by the experience and didn’t want to talk on camera.  But they did say that it is by the Grace of God that they are alive and that no one was hurt after a scary night on and in the water.
