Cab driver murdered during robbery attempt across from Forest Park

ST. LOUIS (KPLR) - A cab driver is found shot to death in the Central West End and the motive is thought to be robbery.

The driver, Timothy Grice, 38, was found shot to death in the driver`s seat of his Laclede Cab at about 10:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, but police believe the shooting happened several hours earlier.

Grice lived in the 1400 block of South Grand.

He was found in his cab parked at Laclede Avenue near Kingshighway Boulevard.

Residents tell police Grice frequently sat in his parked cab at that spot.

GPS data shows he pulled in there at about 2:00 a.m.  Neighbors say they heard a shot at about 2:30 a.m.

Police say it appears only one shot was fired and that Grice was hit in the head.

They also believe the shot came from someone firing from outside the vehicle and was not a passenger.

Surveillance video shows a car speeding through the neighborhood around the time of the murder.  Police are hoping to find more video.

Robbery is suspected because the driver`s cell phone was missing.

Wednesday`s murder is the second in the Central West End this week and that has many there concerned, including business owners who say violent crime in the area is threatening the neighborhood`s economy.

'Ever since that young lady was killed, that SLU volleyball player, things have been changing down here,' said Phil Czarnec, who owns two CWE restaurants. 'The patios aren`t quite as busy as they once were,' he said.

Police Chief Sam Dotson says the department is responding to the murders with manpower.

'You will see extra patrols both in cars, on foot on bikes in the area because that`s what we have to do.'

On Monday, Monica Shaw, 54, was found shot near Sarah and Olive at about 11:00 p.m.

She died at the hospital.  That location is at the edge of the Central West End.

Police say the ballistics from her murder do not match the shell casing found where the cab driver was shot do they don`t think there is a connection.

Anyone with information should call St. Louis Police or Crimestoppers, which increased the reward in the killing of Monica Shaw to $5000.
