Crash into transmission tower causes I-44 to be shutdown for nearly 8 hours

ST. JAMES, MO (KPLR) – A single car accident along Interstate 44 near St. James caused both directions of the highway to be shutdown Saturday.  The incident happened around 11:30 am and shutdown I-44 for 7 hour causing a massive back-up of 10 miles in both directions.

The Public Information Officer for the Missouri Highway State Patrol Trooper Cody Fulkerson told Fox 2 that a female driver of a red SUV drove off the frontage road and crashed into the base of an Ameren Missouri transmission tower.

The tower and power lines never came down on the interstate, but emergency services and Ameren crews on the scene were worried that the tower could pose a danger to motorist.

The female driver was not injured during the accident, but one of the legs of the tower was damaged and the tower was no longer stable.

Ameren crews cut off power to the tower so repairs could be made.

A spokesman for Ameren says no homes or businesses lost power as a result of this accident.

Both directions of I-44 were reopened to traffic shortly after 7 pm.
