Toddler takes car for wild ride at convenience store

FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, IL (KPLR) – A mother leaves her 2-year-old son and baby boy in a running car in Fairview Heights and what happened next stunned many parents.

It all unfolded Sunday evening at a Huck’s convenience store, as the mother, Tykeia O’Dell, made her way into the store. Police say her 2-year-old son climbed out of his car seat, got behind the wheel, and put the vehicle in reverse.

Police said O’Dell’s car rolled backward from the convenience store parking lot into Lincoln Highway. It’s a highway that can become very busy. They indicated O’Dell tried to stop her car, but the door because of automatic locks.

Police said a Good Samaritan, Ryan Jones, from Swansea used his pickup truck to stop the car.

Police arriving at the store began trying to get the children out but not before the2-year-old apparently put the car in drive and hit a police car. No one was hurt. The car was traveling at idling speed.

O’Dell was issued a summons to appear in court for a misdemeanor charge of child endangerment.

The mother suffered cuts to her arm in trying to rescue her children but refused medical treatment.
