St. Louis County Police Department honors original members

CLAYTON, MO (KPLR) - Sixty-one years ago St. Louis County police officers hit the streets for the very first time.  Wednesday the county council honored the first members of that police force.

These charter officers worked six days a week making just $4,000 a year.

They had no healthcare or pension plans and had to provide their own uniforms and firearms.

The only things the department did provide for the officers in 1955 were badges and shields for their hats.  Their first patrol cars were hand me downs from the old St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.

While the department took pride in its beginnings today, they are well aware of the very different challenges today's officers face.
