Maplewood resident locks horns with city over her lawn

MAPLEWOOD, MO (KPLR) – Maplewood resident Alice Hezel has been fighting with the city for years about the weeds in her lawn being too high.

Monday both sides agreed to have this case transferred to the St. Louis County Circuit Court.

The city of Maplewood has an ordinance stating that weeds cannot be any taller than 12 inches.

According to the city Hezel is in violation of that ordinance.

Hezel said her yard is not full of weeds; it is all plants she picked out and planted.

Maplewood Assistant City Manager and Director of Public Works Anthony Traxler said they have been trying to work with Hezel while balancing complaints from other residents.

Traxler said Hezel has never been fined or threatened with jail time; they just want a little maintenance from her.

Hezel’s attorney, Bruce Morrison, said she is maintaining her yard, and according to city ordinance if you are taking care of your plants they can be over 12 inches tall.

A date for Hezel's next court appearance has not been set.
