(KPLR) - Immunizations, eye exams, and well-woman visits are just a few of the free services available at a health fair Saturday in north St. Louis.
The Strong Women and Families Health and Resource Fair will take place Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Grace Hill Water Tower Hub on 2126 East Grand Avenue.
The one-stop-shop event draws hundreds of families seeking assistance with health services, as well as credit counseling, legal assistance, and voter registration.
“We’re here to ensure quality of life. We’re here to partner with families and neighbors so people can begin to seek optimism and build stronger communities,” Grace Hill Settlement House Chief Administrative Officer Laura Kozak said.
The child-friendly fair will include back-to-school physicals, just in time for the school year, which begins next Wednesday in the St. Louis Public Schools District.
“What I really like about it [are] the physicals and the shots, because without them, the children couldn’t even start school at the beginning of the year,” Candace Israelsen, a College Hill resident, said.
The fair is heavily targeted to women, many of whom delay or put off their needs.
“Moms tend to put themselves last, so it’s very important. Because moms tend to be the heart of the home,” Dr. Melissa Tepe, an Affinia OB-GYN said. Affinia is one of the sponsors of the event.
Tepe said the OB-GYN exams and well-woman visits make a big difference.
“We pick up a lot of issues on screenings. What women need. What women want. Abnormal pap smears. Sometimes infections.”
Free shuttle transportation will be made available for the fair. Buses will pick up interested participants at the St. Patrick Center, Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club, Wohl Recreation Center and Queen of Peace.
The event is a partnership of several organizations, including Affinia Healthcare, Grace Hill Settlement House, and the Junior League of St. Louis.
